High-Output Alternators for the Polaris Slingshot
A show-stopping stereo, full underglow, and a dash of screens will pull a Slingshot's factory alternator flat. Here's how to give it the headroom it needs — in both engine eras.
The Polaris Slingshot is a build platform first and a vehicle second. Owners pour money into audio, lighting, screens, and underglow — and every one of those upgrades draws current the factory charging system was never sized to deliver. If your voltage dips when the bass hits, your lights pulse with the beat, or your head unit resets at idle, you've found the ceiling of your stock alternator.

2015–2019 Slingshot: the GM Ecotec years
Early Slingshots run the 2.4L GM Ecotec engine, and Mechman covers it with the S-Series — a 6-phase alternator design that delivers big output in a compact, durable package. The 6-phase layout, 12 diodes, twin rectifier plates, and strong internal airflow are built for long service life even in severe-duty conditions, and the design uses less horsepower per kilowatt produced than a conventional 3-phase unit.
- 240-amp S-Series — the sweet spot, with the best balance of peak output and strong output at idle RPM.
- 320-amp S-Series — maximum headroom for serious audio and lighting builds.
Install is refreshingly simple. A single wire on the included pigtail connects to any ignition-switched 12V+ source to turn the alternator on and off with the key. The included P103 RVC bypass plug keeps the check-battery light off in most applications — run a properly sized positive and ground cable to the battery and you're charging. Note the unit uses a smaller 1.75-inch pulley, so plan on a slightly shorter drive belt for correct tension.
For a stereo-first Slingshot, idle output matters as much as peak. Big systems get played parked, at shows, and at stoplights — exactly where weaker alternators sag. The S-Series is engineered to hold output low in the RPM band, which is why the 240A is the popular all-rounder.
2020–2025 Slingshot: the 2.0L billet upgrade
In 2020 the Slingshot moved to Polaris's own 2.0L ProStar engine, and the charging upgrade changed with it. For these cars, Mechman offers a billet 250-amp and 400-amp alternator engineered to mount in the factory location using the factory stretch belt — no new brackets to fabricate.
- 250-amp billet — the proven platform; plenty for strong audio and lighting builds.
- 400-amp billet (B22953400M) — the highest output offered for this platform, built for big audio, extensive lighting, multiple auxiliary battery banks, and other sustained high-demand loads.
Both use an internal regulator with a simple one-wire excitation connection, and the kit includes the regulator excitation pigtail and a spacer for proper mounting of the factory cover bracket. They're built to hold stable charging from low RPM through peak engine speed and to last in street, off-road, and work-use environments.

How much alternator do you actually need?
Rule of thumb: add up the continuous current your amplifiers, lighting, and accessories pull, then leave real headroom on top — a charging system run at its limit sags and runs hot. If you're building a competition-level stereo or stacking amps, lighting, and screens, step up to the 320A or 400A. For a clean, loud street build, the 240A or 250A usually has the margin you want.

What's the difference between the 240A and 320A S-Series?
Both are 6-phase S-Series alternators. The 240-amp model offers the best balance of peak output and strong output at idle RPM, which makes it the popular all-round choice. The 320-amp steps up maximum output for serious audio and lighting builds that need more sustained current.
Is the install hard?
It's straightforward on both platforms. The S-Series (2015–2019) uses a single ignition-switched wire on the included pigtail, plus the included P103 RVC bypass plug to keep the check-battery light off, and a slightly shorter belt for the 1.75-inch pulley. The billet units (2020–2025) mount in the factory location on the factory stretch belt, use a one-wire excitation, and include the pigtail and cover-bracket spacer.
Why does my stereo reset or my lights dim at idle?
That's a charging system running out of headroom. When your accessories draw more than the alternator can supply — most likely at idle, where many alternators make far less than their peak — voltage drops and the battery drains to cover the gap. A high-output alternator sized with margin keeps voltage stable so the system stays clean and consistent.
